The Virginia Blogs: Sailing, sailing…

Or, Floating Around in a Sailboat on the York River with No Wind.

This blog is gonna be short—as if you couldn’t tell from the title.

We are fortunate enough to live very close to the ocean, and the rivers that feed out to it. On a lot of these rivers there are some very unique things to do. Swimming, boating, jet skiing and sailing.

We found a great little beach and dock up in the Yorktown Victory Center, and there was a huge three masted schooner that sailed out from that dock during the summer. So, one bright, semi-hot day, we decided to go out on the boat for a sail.

I love sailing. Dad’s friend used to take us out on his boat and I loved it. I love the water and I love boats and just seemed to be a great idea for a day out of the house.

Fail.

“And I’m sitting in the hot sun why?”

There was absolutely no wind. Not a stinking hint of a breeze. We got out away from the dock, they shut off the steering motor, and that was it. The sails fell empty the whole time we were out there. We went maybe two miles down and then two miles back—and the captain said that there were times they made it all the way out to the Chesapeake and back in two, three hours.

Clearly, we were not that fortunate. However, it was a true three-masted schooner, so it was very very photogenic.

This pictures is one of my favorites that I have taken.
